June – Meeting and Print Critique

Meeting and Print Critique
Wednesday, June 17 at 7 PM Via Zoom

Log on for Social Hour beginning at 6 PM.

We had originally planned on a Print Competition for June.
Since we are meeting via Zoom and implementing this format on zoom for the first time, we are unsure of how images will display across the many different monitors (some calibrated, some not) used by our members, guests and judges. Therefore, this will not be a scored print competition. Instead, it will be a live print critique.
Judges might offer what they would have scored it, but awards will not be handed out and first, second, and third place will not be identified.

We have two valued judges who will offer their critiques:
Owen Kassimir – former President of PPSNYS and
Frank Bulfamante – former President of HVPPSNY

For this critique only, please send your images to

Joseph Roybal
Unlocking Your Images Full Potential:
Color Harmony and Eye Movement Within The Frame

Opening_Slide
“Have you ever wondered what makes certain photographs pop and are full of vibrancy and life while others just seem to be a challenge to get to work right? In this discussion, Joseph will go over his philosophies on Color Harmony and Theory addressing these points in several of his images and how this all starts in the field when capturing a photograph. Joseph will discuss a bit of his workflow in the field when looking at a scene assessing its potential analyzing which focal points are catching his eye then and how he brings these to life later in post-processing via color and light. Joseph will also discuss how the natural colors that were there during capture are your best starting point and how to get these to work in harmony later in post.”

Headshot-aJoseph Roybal is a full-time professional landscape and travel photographer based in Denver, Colorado specializing in landscape imagery from around the globe. His passion lies simply in being immersed in the outdoors searching for dramatic light and mood within the frame. Joseph has traveled the globe in search of stunning vistas and scenes with the ambitions of taking the viewers of his work on a visual journey to these locations and evoking the feeling as if there are standing in the scene in person. Joseph is partnered with several leading photographic companies in the industry and is also a Breakthrough Photography Team Pro. In his logo, Joseph utilizes the tagline Explore.Learn.Share as it is these three main components to his philosophy as a photographer that inspire him each and every day. He loves to take everything he has learned while being in the field and share this knowledge later instructing post-processing courses, during private and group photography workshops and tours around the globe.

with Guest Speaker, Lisa Cuchara – “Creativity is Contagious, Pass it on!”
Creativity is contagious, pass it on! Learn how to be creative in your camera and in your post-processing. Long exposures, multiple exposures, overall creativity in camera and in post-processing (plugins, HDR, and textures), creative focusing (Bokeh, soft focus, focus stacking), camera movement (panning, rotate, overall creativity in camera and in post-processing (plugins, HDR, and textures, etc), neutral density, Bulb setting, white balance, filters, panoramas, perspective, composites, plugins, HDR, tone mapping, Textures, etc.

1[1]Lisa Cuchara, PhD, Master Craftsman (PPA), Master of Photography (M. Photog.) HonNEC, is very passionate about photography and she enjoys both being behind the lens and in the digital darkroom. She loves to photograph nature but finds many subjects equally intriguing. From birds and flowers to babies and UrbEx/HDR, she appreciates the world around her and embraces the challenge of interpreting what her eyes see and her heart feel via her photographs. Lisa says that photography allows her to pay attention to the details, to be mindful, to slow down and appreciate all of the beauty, details and nuances of everyday life. Lisa met her husband Tom through photography, and they are both very active in many local, national, and international photography organizations. They have had many successful gallery exhibitions, their work has been accepted into many juried exhibitions and their images have won awards at the local, state, national, and international levels. Their photographs have appeared in Adirondack Life, Wild Bird, Birder’s World, in calendars and on calendar covers, and on the cover of a fictional paperback novel. Lisa has also had images accepted into the PPA (Professional Photographers Association) loan collection and has earned three Bronze image competition cases.

They have published two books with Amherst Media: “Create Fine Art Photographs from Historic Places and Rusty Things” is about their HDR and light painted images (Amazon http://tinyurl.com/lisatom-urbex and also available at brick and mortar bookstores like Barnes & Noble) and their second book “The Frog Whisperer” http://tinyurl.com/lisatom-frogs is about macro photography, using frogs as subjects. Lisa & Tom have been photographing people professionally for over 16 years and have their own Photography Studio in Hamden CT. Their portrait philosophy is based on “We do not remember days, we remember Moments”. Lisa & Tom love to teach, inspire and share. They have presented a wide variety of motivational and instructional programs and workshops (Photoshop, Digital Workflow, HDR, RAW processing, Macro photography, Travel photography) at many photography groups, conventions, and organizations. Check out their photo and editing classes, their photo tours and workshops, and view their photographs at www.PhotographyByLisaAndTom.com. Get Tips & Tricks about photo ops, post-processing, creativity, gear, etc. and learn more about their photography classes and workshops by joining their email list http://tinyurl.com/cuchara-photolist.

BIO: Ruth began her career in photography in 2003 when she opened her studio in Averill Park, NY. Using the massive array of costumes she aquired from a previous business and her love for children along with her imaginative mind, it was an easy transition to create a niche market for Norman Rockwell-like images. She joined PPSNYS in 2010, followed by PPA in 2015 when she began working on her PPA Masters degree. Ruth has earned numerous awards and Merits at PPA International and State level competitions including Merits, Courts of Honor and Judge’s Choice Awards.
