March Meeting
March 2016 Meeting – Dynamic On-Location Portraits
Join us at our next meeting on March 16th – Dynamic On-Location Portraits
When shooting on location, we don’t always have the luxury of ideal settings and conditions. So we have to make it work!
By looking at the thought-process in how we set up an on-location shoot, we’ll look at posing and specifically the lighting, whether available light, or additional lighting. We will look at all the factors that have to come together for a successful portrait and a consistent style.
We will discuss practical steps to develop and achieve consistency with your on-location portrait photography.

February Meeting
February 17th Meeting – How to get that Merit
Join us for our February meeting on Wednesday, February 17th at 5:30 p.m. Social Hour / 6:30 Meeting at our NEW LOCATION: La Casa Vicinia in New Windsor 1015 Little Britain Road. Members: $27 ; Guests $27 (first meeting); Non-Members: $40 R.S.V.P. by Sunday, February 14th
Paul Bernstein and Owen Kassimir will be joining us for “How to Get that Merit”. What factors does an image need to earn that Blue Ribbon? Is it technically good enough? Does it have that “Wow” factor to make it stand out? Will it make viewers know the maker is a true artist? Does it tell a story to impress the judging panel? What do the judges look for? How do they base their scoring? Paul and Owen are PPA trained judges and they will take you through the process of selecting the appropriate “WOW” image for competition, enhancing it in postproduction, creating a professional presentation and giving that perfect title to put it over the top. Learn the techniques and procedures that you, as the photographer, can master to increase the odds of scoring 80 or above as well as creating better art for yourself, and higher quality, more profitable work for your clients.
RSVP to info@hvppsny.org by Sunday, February 14th.

Every artist works in a preferred medium. As photographers, our medium is light. For us, the use of light and shadow creates the illusion of depth in two dimensional images. Light has several variables that we also must take into consideration and control when making images: direction, intensity, color temperature and quality. What defines a true professional is the ability to see the light, determine if it is perfect for the task at hand and then have the capability to modify or substitute the source if it is not.
My program is designed to raise your ability to see the light, select the correct photographic tools, plus utilize the proper lighting techniques in order to create three dimensional portraits and candids every time you hit the shutter. It’s all about being able to consistently control your illumination to suit every situation and subject.
Paul’s Bio – Paul has been a professional photographer for over 38 years, during which time he has photographed 2500 social events and countless portrait sessions. He is a master of lighting and posing, as well as candid photography. He is certified by the Professional Photographers of America and holds both Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman degrees from PPA. He is the president of the Professional Photographers Society of New York State, former president of the Professional Photographers of Greater New York, a council member of the Professional Photographers of America, as well as a member of both the American Society of Photographers and Wedding and Portrait Professionals International.
Paul and his wife Caryn Benjamin have lectured and presented their innovative ideas to groups of professional photographers around the country. In 20o4, 2008 and 2010 they were honored by Professional Photographers of America among the “Photographers of the Year”.
